The 2nd Hwarang Tournament sanctioned by the Singapore Taekwondo Federation turned out to be better than the first despite it being organized during the school holidays
The event staged on 16 December 2006 at Maris Stella High School attracted 150 participants from 19 schools. They competed against each other for honours in 3 categories – sparring, pattern and ‘tkd challenge’.
The ‘tkd challenge’ required the participants to perform skills that tested their endurance, speed, power and versatility.
Said Leonard Wee, Chairman of Maris Stella High Taekwondo Club: ”The ‘tkd challenge’ can be considered a mini-marathon. It was quite tough as the participants needed to have a lot of stamina to compete successfully in the category.”
Despite the keen competition, sportsmanship and friendship prevailed. Each performance was greeted with loud applause from everyone. While the competition was in progress, those who were not involved took the opportunity to make new friends.
At the end of the tournament, Leonard said: “The tournament was a huge success and everyone had a great time. Given the strong support from the various schools, we are confident that next year’s tournament will be bigger and better.”
